Mintel Alternatives: Choose the Evidence Behind Your Next Decision
Compare five alternatives for category context, audience attitudes and shopper behavior. Decide whether another subscription or a new study fills the gap.

Choose a Mintel alternative by the evidence your decision is missing. Euromonitor Passport is worth investigating for cross-market category context; NIQ Consumer Life for consumer values and attitudes; Circana for covered shopper and purchase behavior; IBISWorld for industry structure; and GWI for online-consumer profiles. These are different products, not interchangeable report subscriptions.
Our syndicated research alternatives guide puts category intelligence beside public statistics, report marketplaces and custom research.
If a Mintel report already covers the category, country and question, keeping it may be the useful choice. If the gap concerns a new concept, message or experience the report did not study, another broad subscription may leave the same question unanswered. When the gap requires actual product use, lived experience or observed behavior, commission human fieldwork designed around that question.
Five options and the decisions they can support
Research option | Evidence, purchasing model and buyer fit |
|---|---|
Standardized category data, market sizes and shares, historical context, forecasts and analyst research within the subscription's scope. Investigate for comparable category context across markets. Distinguish forecasts and estimates from observed sales. | |
Survey-based consumer attitudes, values and behaviors, with research, trend queries and consulting access scoped to the service. Investigate for longitudinal consumer context and segment questions; stated attitudes do not establish purchase. | |
Purchase panels, survey insight and related data products, with coverage and commercial terms to confirm. Investigate for shopper, trial, repeat or basket questions in the covered categories and channels. Purchase behavior alone does not explain a person's motive. | |
Analyst-produced industry reports and data, available through individual purchases or memberships. Investigate for industry boundaries, structure and competitive context; confirm the specific geography and collection. | |
Recurring survey-based online-consumer profiles with subscription access. Investigate for audience attitudes and media behavior covered by the questions and markets. It does not automatically provide Mintel's report structure or observed purchases. |
Compare a sample output against the decision before comparing the contract price. Ask what you can inspect, export and reuse, and what research work remains with your own team.
Euromonitor Passport: cross-market category context
Passport combines category market data, historical context, forecasts and analyst research. It is relevant when a team needs a consistent framework for comparing categories or countries over time.
Start with the proposed category and geography. Check which data, years, reports and consumer material are included in the subscription. API or other content access can have separate terms; do not assume a dashboard subscription buys every export or integration.
Ask how the underlying market is defined and how estimates or forecasts are produced. A consistent market series can help frame an expansion decision while leaving the exact offer and reachable buyers unresolved. Use additional research for those questions rather than reading product preference into a category forecast.
NIQ Consumer Life: the values and attitudes behind a segment
Consumer Life supplies recurring consumer research and ways to explore trends. It can be useful when the question concerns the values, attitudes and behaviors represented in the product, with access and consulting scoped to the purchase.
Inspect the population, question wording, market and field period. A trend in stated attitudes can suggest a question to investigate; it does not show that the same people bought a particular new product.
NIQ has several research and measurement products. The exact Consumer Life offer should be compared with the exact Mintel report or subscription under consideration. A company's broader retail-measurement capability is not automatically included in one consumer-insight purchase.
Circana: investigate what covered shoppers buy
Circana's consumer solutions combine purchase-panel, survey and related data approaches. Its consumer-panel definition describes longitudinal purchase reporting by pre-recruited households.
This is relevant when a buyer needs evidence about trial, repeat, baskets or other covered purchase behavior. Ask which categories, channels, households and markets the offered data represents, and how the returned measures are constructed.
Observed or reported purchases can answer a different question from a consumer's explanation. If a household switches products, purchase records can help establish the change; understanding why may need another source. Confirm the product and methodology before treating a panel, survey and point-of-sale series as one interchangeable evidence base.
IBISWorld: industry structure and commercial context
IBISWorld's report collections cover defined industries and geographies. Single reports and memberships offer different purchasing routes.
Investigate it when the question concerns industry structure, competitive context and analyst interpretation. Check a sample report, its industry definition and the method behind important estimates. The industry represented in a report may be wider than the consumer category your team wants to develop.
It can therefore complement a category or consumer report rather than replace it. A useful shortlist keeps that distinction explicit: what additional decision can this report support, and which question would still require another source?
GWI: audience profiles and media questions
GWI provides recurring survey-based online-consumer profiles within its covered markets and questions. It is relevant when planning around audience characteristics, attitudes or media behavior.
Compare the actual response population and wording with the people and decision you care about. Confirm access, markets and export terms for the plan. A flexible audience query and an authored category report can support different workflows even when they discuss a similar consumer.
Use a new study if the proposed product or message is absent from the existing data. A profile can inform who to investigate without answering what those people think of an offer they have never been shown.
When Mintel remains the better purchase
Mintel's purchasing options include individually priced reports, market-scoped subscriptions and consulting. Its method description includes proprietary surveys, panels, public databases and industry research. It is inaccurate to describe every Mintel product as a resale of the same third-party reports.
Keep or buy the relevant Mintel product when its category, market, evidence and interpretation match the brief and the rights support the intended use. An existing report may answer the question faster than commissioning new work. Check the underlying collection period and specific contents rather than assuming publication date or report breadth settles suitability.
A replacement is more useful when you can name the gap: missing country, channel, audience, period, measure, access or decision support. Put that gap into the proposal request. Otherwise, the new subscription can reproduce the same limitation at another price.
One category decision can need three kinds of evidence
Suppose a food brand is considering a smaller pack. This is an illustrative procurement question, not a reported study. Category context can show what the relevant market covers and how it has developed. Purchase data can investigate covered shoppers' behavior. New research can compare the complete pack-and-price offers or explore why people respond differently.
Those sources should support one decision without being collapsed into the same measure. A stated preference is not an observed basket, and an industry forecast is not a test of the proposed pack.
Our CPG research guide connects research methods to category decisions. The price-pack architecture guide addresses the combined offer when size and price change together.
A procurement brief that makes alternatives comparable
Put in the brief | Ask the supplier to demonstrate |
|---|---|
Decision and missing evidence | Which part of the question its actual product answers, with a sample table or report. |
Category and geography | Definitions, countries, channels, audience and important exclusions. |
Time and method | Collection periods, source types, refresh cycle and whether each measure is observed, surveyed, estimated or forecast. |
Access and interpretation | Included users, exports, sharing and publication rights, analyst support and any additional services. |
Commercial scope | Individual report, subscription or project terms, with add-ons and the work your team still needs to do. |
Where a new Sapien study fits
At Sapien, we run surveys, interviews and comparisons with data-grounded simulated audiences, using relevant customer research to add context. A study can investigate proposed offers, messages and audience differences that an existing category report did not examine.
It produces modeled responses, rather than newly observed purchases or human interviews. Define the task and audience, inspect relevant validation and keep the result separate from the category and transaction evidence used alongside it.
The syndicated-research alternatives hub compares the wider purchasing routes. Discuss the decision with Sapien when the missing evidence concerns a specific comparison your team needs to investigate.
