Sapien vs Lakmoos: Managed Study or Private Model?

Compare team-run research with a private-model program through a garden-kit decision, pilot acceptance rules and explicit planning economics.

A private model earns its place when a team has a continuing research agenda and someone to own it. When your priority is a product, pricing or campaign decision with research and interpretation handled by a team, we recommend Sapien. You receive an interactive report with segment differences and responses you can inspect, plus follow-up questions to keep investigating.

Lakmoos builds private models and supports setup so clients can run surveys and interviews internally. Sapien can support follow-up and further studies too. The useful comparison is who will own the ongoing research work and how that work helps you make decisions.

Compare the operating model

Lakmoos describes a private-model workflow in which customer data informs a model that the client can use for repeated research. Its science page describes a proprietary hybrid AI approach and a private enterprise data layer.

Sapien uses purchase, behavioral, demographic and research information to ground simulated audiences; customer data and past research can add context. Our team takes the study through audience construction, surveys, qualitative interviews or comparison tests, and interpretation. Our audience-building guide explains the process and interactive readout.

Dimension

Documented offerings

Research ownership

Sapien: Our team builds the audience, runs the study and helps interpret findings.

Lakmoos: Its team builds a private model; clients can run surveys and interviews after setup.

Customer context

Sapien: Customer data and past research are optional inputs.

Lakmoos: Private customer-data integration is part of its custom-model workflow.

What to inspect

Sapien: Interactive report, segment comparisons, responses, recommendations and follow-ups.

Lakmoos: Model fit, research outputs, setup support and the internal team's ability to use them.

Commercial scope

Sapien: Request a quote for the study and deliverables.

Lakmoos: A published pilot precedes a possible ongoing program; confirm limits and full terms.

Both providers include expertise and support. Choose how much ongoing research work your team wants to own after setup.

Make the first decision earn the recurring program

Consider Canopy, a fictional garden retailer introducing a $35 balcony herb kit with $5 shipping and no subscription. The kit contains three pots, compost and basil, mint and parsley seeds. The team is choosing between printed step-by-step instructions and printed instructions plus QR-linked video guidance, at the same price.

Canopy also has a wider ambition: use a private customer model for future seasonal ranges. It owns past gardening surveys, but those studies cover a broader population than balcony gardeners. Before buying an ongoing capability, the team needs to know whether the evidence covers the buyers and setting behind this first decision.

For a Sapien study, the immediate brief is concrete: compare the complete kit presentations among relevant buyers, distinguish experienced growers from beginners where useful, and investigate whether the instructions address the barriers to trying the kit. The report should help Canopy choose the presentation to develop, identify the audience it fits and decide what needs a customer trial.

For a Lakmoos pilot, Canopy should assess that decision and the capability it wants to keep using. A useful acceptance rule has three parts:

  • Audience fit: the provider explains which evidence supports balcony gardeners and which gaps remain. A detailed model of all gardeners does not settle that narrower coverage question.
  • Decision use: the team can inspect why the presentations differ and turn the output into a kit or instruction change. A preference number without that interpretation leaves the product team stuck.
  • Internal ownership: a named researcher can frame the next question, check the output and decide when the model needs new evidence or provider support.

If those conditions are met and Canopy has a real queue of decisions, an ongoing program may be worthwhile. If the immediate need is to resolve the kit question with research support, commission the study first. Recurring access creates value through useful decisions your team is equipped to make.

Inspect the pilot rather than the word “unlimited”

Lakmoos currently publishes a €10,000 pilot: one focused model, up to ten past surveys or datasets, and one month for two to five users with training. The listed allowance includes 500 survey questions and 200 interview questions. Confirm how those units are counted and which follow-ups use the allowance.

Plan against decisions your team actually expects to use. Allocating the €10,000 pilot fee across two usable decision readouts gives €5,000 per decision; across ten, €1,000, before internal staff costs. These are planning scenarios, not promised study counts. Confirm whether the scope and question allowances cover your agenda.

Lakmoos also promotes ongoing access “from 4k/month,” without a currency on that line. Confirm currency, scope, support and minimum term. Sapien's reviewed public pages do not list a numerical fee for Canopy's study; request the deliverables and full fee together.

Use validation that fits the model's job

Lakmoos's Škoda X case describes a January–March 2024 proof of concept. Its timeline lists later validation and organizational ramp-up stages, with conventional human-survey comparisons and an internal user pilot in the evaluation plan. The case offers a useful way to assess both a model and the internal capability needed to use it. It is a vendor-authored case for that engagement, rather than validation of Canopy's gardening audience.

Our fourteen comparisons with human research show task-specific results and discrepancies for Sapien. Ask about the audience, question and error relevant to your decision. A modeled explanation of why a kit appeals is different from observing whether customers successfully grow the herbs.

Choose Sapien when the next decision needs a research team

We recommend Sapien when you want the study completed and explained, with a recommendation you can investigate through segment comparisons and follow-up questions. Bring the product alternatives and the context you have; a finished questionnaire or private-model program is not required to start the conversation.
